Geology Day was created by the Swedish National Committee for Geological Sciences and was first celebrated in 2001. Since then, Geology Day is celebrated on the second Saturday in September with excursions, gold panning, visits to mines, etc. The inauguration occurs on the day before.
The board of Geology Day is responsible for long-term planning. The Board oversees regulations on membership, activities, purpose, etc. Daily operations are run by a project manager. Together with approximately 1 000 members, this represents the Geology Day Association.
